The principle
WhatsApp is tied to your number, not to which SIM provides internet. As long as the app stays registered to your home number, it keeps working over any data connection — including a travel eSIM.
The 5-minute configuration
- Install the travel eSIM at home on Wi-Fi (guide).
- Keep your home SIM enabled — for its number, not its data.
- Home line: Data Roaming OFF. This is your bill-shock firewall.
- Set the eSIM as the mobile-data line and enable its data roaming.
- Do not tap “change number” in WhatsApp. Nothing to change.
What still reaches you
- WhatsApp calls & messages — over eSIM data, free.
- Incoming SMS (bank codes, OTPs) — received on the home SIM; incoming texts are free to receive in almost every country.
- Incoming voice calls — they ring, but answering uses your carrier’s roaming voice rates; let non-urgent ones go to WhatsApp.
iPhone specifics
Label the lines (Personal / Travel), then Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → Travel. Leave “Allow Cellular Data Switching” OFF so the phone never silently falls back to your expensive line.
Android specifics
SIM manager → Mobile data → travel eSIM; Calls & texts → home SIM. Samsung and Pixel both allow per-SIM roaming toggles — check the home SIM shows roaming off.
